Simpler Recycling: Six Months of Progress and Impact
It’s been a busy period at GENeco, with strong momentum following the rollout of Simpler Recycling legislation. The shift toward consistent food waste collections across England is reshaping the sector and we’re proud to be helping businesses adapt and thrive.
As a food waste collection service powered by the very waste we collect, this legislation aligns perfectly with our mission. Every additional bin means more renewable energy, greater carbon savings, and less landfill – a cycle of progress we’re proud to lead.
Scaling up to meet demand
Since the policy update, we’ve expanded our operations to support brokers, independents restaurants, schools, and businesses preparing for the next phase in March 2026.
Here’s what the last five months look like:
- 150 new sites onboarded
- 205 bins delivered
- 250 bins on order to meet growing demand
- 320+ tonnes of carbon emissions prevented through anaerobic digestion
- 500+ tonnes of food waste collected, roughly the weight of all the stones at Stonehenge.
Our fleet of bio-gas-powered vehicles is working harder than ever. At GENeco, food waste isn’t just waste, it’s a resource that powers our fleet and contributes to a cleaner future.
Why this matters
Food waste is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions when sent to landfill. By separating it at source, we recover nutrients and generate clean energy which is a priority for the UK government.
The Simpler Recycling reforms are expected to:
- help the UK reach 65% municipal waste recycling by 2035
- deliver £11.8 billion in greenhouse gas savings
- require weekly food waste collections for most households by March 2026
- bring over 2.2 million businesses into separate waste collections.

We understand that adapting to new legislation can be challenging. That’s why our team focuses on delivering a reliable, responsive service that helps businesses stay compliant and confident.

"I would like to thank you for all the good work you do and we look forward to us continuing work with you."
Looking ahead
Recycling shouldn’t depend on location or business size and now, it doesn’t. With food waste collections expanding nationwide, more people can recycle right every week.
We’re proud to help our customers embrace this new era of resource recovery. Not just by collecting food waste, but by transforming it into energy that powers our fleet and supports a greener future.
