  • Busy bees creating a buzz in Bristol

Following the success of the Bio-Bee launch at the end of last year, GENeco’s unique food waste collections service has grown with a second vehicle being added to the fleet.

    Two bees

The second Bio-Bee has bigger fuel tanks which means the vehicle can work for longer without needing to refuel. Both Bio-Bees are powered using biomethane produced from the food waste they collect.

The addition of another vehicle has allowed the expansion of the food waste collections service to offer ad-hoc or emergency collections within the Bristol area from any commercial premises. These can be arranged by contacting the GENeco office.

To increase flexibility for customers, the Bio-Bee can also now accept payment for food waste collections by PayPal.

Hannah Swaffield, bioresources graduate, explained: “We can now give customers the option to pay on the spot (or by telephone) with a credit or debit card using a chip & pin device.”

“Transactions under £30 can take advantage of the contactless payment facility.”

Since its launch in October 2017, the Bio-Bee service has collected over 150 tonnes of food waste from customers in Bristol including Boston Tea Party, St Monica Trust and Extract Coffee Roasters.

Diverting this amount of waste from landfill equates to CO2 savings of over 100 tonnes, the equivalent of taking 35 cars off the road for a year. The biomethane generated from the food waste would power the Bio-Bee for over 70,000 miles or provide 15 households with their annual gas needs.

Sean McGowan, production manager at Extract Coffee Roasters, said: “'Working with GENeco to provide our food waste solution was a logical choice for us - a reliable, local collection structure combined with a shared environmental ethos."
